Box-office and critical reax to that adorable robot are so socko that everybody’s gushing over the idea that the film will get ?” forget the Oscar for best animated feature, which seems inevitable ?” a nomination for the highest prize. Only one animated film ?” "Beauty and the Beast" in 1991 ?” has been nominated for Oscar’s biggest prize, and that wholesome Disney toon lost to the gory thriller "The Silence of the Lambs" (which was only the third film to sweep the top five races). While "Beauty and the Beast" heralded a renaissance in Disney animated fare, none of the follow-up musical toons ?”- such as "Aladdin" (1992) and "The Lion King" (1994) ?”- could break into the bigger Oscar races, though they scored music awards and the like. In 1995, high-grossing "Toy Story" became the first animated feature to earn a screenplay nom (it lost to "The Usual Suspects"), but it also failed to reap a best picture bid. While it picked up a pair of technical nods, as well as noms for score and screenplay, "Ratatouille" at the end of Oscar night had to be satisfied with winning the consolation prize of best animated feature. read more

The worldwide Internet ad market will be an exciting place for the next few years, according to a new report from IDC. By the time 2011 rolls around, online advertising still won’t have replaced traditional methods, but a whole lot more money will be involved than what we see today. John Gantz, IDC’s chief research officer, observed in a statement, "Compared to more mature types of advertising, Internet advertising is growing at a phenomenal rate. Gantz then noted, "But Internet advertising is still relatively new and growing from a much smaller base. By the end of the forecast period, spending for Internet advertising will trail direct mail - the third largest form of advertising - by more than $30 billion, while spending on TV and print ads will each be nearly twice as great as for online ads. read more

Then I see Judith Sim has been effusive throwing out numbers for Oracle marketing spend, saying it has fallen from 5% to 1. Fiscal 2007 , the last year for which we can make a direct full year comparison saw total revenue at $18 billion and M&S cost at $3. When I presented at Lisbon , I showed a photo I had taken at Madrid Barajas airport (reproduced at the top of this article) as an example of wasted marketing spend. That trauma won’t happen anytime soon but it absolutely is not beyond the realms of possibility if service organizations like RiminiStreet and others can crank the services handle and take advantage of the alleged price hike and so attack Oracle’s margins. That suggests to me it costs Oracle 64 cents on the dollar in sales costs to clinch each deal which in turn hooks the customer into those lucrative maintenance contracts. read more

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc was named on Monday in a trade secrets lawsuit alleging that the company’s business software unit copied a tiny start-up’s tool for moving customers off of Microsoft software onto Google’s. LimitNone LLC filed a complaint in an Illinois circuit court alleging that Google at first began promoting the smaller firm’s tool for migrating Microsoft Outlook customers to Gmail, then copied the idea and went into competition with it. The lawsuit was brought by the commercial litigation firm of Kelley Drye & Warren LLP — by the same team who previously faced off with Google in a trademark case involving the Silicon Valley company’s highly successful online advertising system. The latest suit takes aim at the company’s fast-growing Google Apps software application business, which includes Gmail for business users. The case details LimitNone’s meetings starting in March 2007 with Google to build a tool it called “gMove” for moving the e-mail, address books and calendars of corporate customers from Microsoft Corp’s Outlook into Gmail. LimitNone said it entered a confidentiality deal with Google to share trade secrets of its e-mail migration tool with Google engineers, sales people and key Google Apps customers. read more
