A group of citizens who formed Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance, or LOWA, moved fast last summer to put together a watershed plan and apply for a million-dollar grant to develop a plan to fix the sewer problem. John Tucker, publisher of the Lake Sun Leader and some other lake papers, agreed that people needed to protect the lake, a haven for tourists and a job bank for thousands of residents. read more

Whatever your strengths and weaknesses, you will need to “bring your A game” to this job market, said Katharine Brooks, director of liberal arts career services at the University of Texas at Austin and author of a career guide called “You Majored in What? Above all, “you need to be able to articulate the value of your degree,” she said, especially if you are in the liberal arts, and there isn’t a linear connection between what you majored in and the job you are seeking. Beyond your major, have stories to tell about how your experiences would make you a good employee, suggested Nathan Bennett, co-author of “Your Career Game” and a professor at the Georgia Tech College of Management. PHILADELPHIA — For far too long, cable customers fumed as they waited in vain for the cable guy to show up. Cable companies are forced to do it because of intensifying competition from satellite TV and phone companies that offer video — and from people disconnecting subscription TV services altogether to watch videos online. Although overall cable service prices were rising, the companies offered bundles of TV, Internet and phone plans, and threw in some freebies and other promotions. It doesn’t help that while there are Federal Communications Commission standards for cable customer service, other cable regulations vary based on who is enforcing them. Such inconsistent standards, and a near-monopoly on TV service in the areas that cable companies serve, have let them get away with treating customers indifferently for years. Recently, though, cable companies such as Comcast, Charter and Time Warner Cable have been reaching out to customers through Twitter and other social networking sites to find complaints and resolve problems. read more
