RIM said Frank Boulben will be the new chief marketing officer, a job RIM’s new CEO Thorsten Heins described as critically important for the struggling company. Boulben, 45, served as executive vice president of strategy and marketing at LightSquared, a wireless company that has been struggling since U. Tear, 48, was executive vice president of Sony Mobile Communications, a unit of another struggling technology company, Sony Corp. RIM is working on launching a new operating system just as Americans are abandoning their BlackBerrys for iPhones and models that run Google’s Android software. RIM has been without a chief marketing officer since last year and without a chief operating officer since Heins was promoted in January. RIM is also dealing with a “bring your own device” trend, in which employees bring their personal iPhones or Android devices to work instead of relying on BlackBerrys issued by their employers. read more

Protect Your Company's Website From Malware – BusinessWeek(E-Business)

But when attendees went online the next day to search for their portraits, they got security warnings from their Internet browsers stating that Christopher?s site had been blacklisted, or blocked due to malware, which is malicious software put on a site without the owner?s consent. The owner of the $2 million business had anti-virus software in place to protect his computers but hadn?t realized he needed separate security software for his website. As the ability to hack individual computers has been narrowed by automatic operating system updates and effective anti-virus software, hackers are now targeting small companies? websites, according to Anirban Banerjee, chief technology officer at Stop The Hacker , a three-year-old San Francisco company funded with a $950,000 National Science Foundation grant to develop Internet security technology. Teri Dourmashkin, founder of New York skin care company La Via Céleste , has no idea how much revenue she lost while her website was blacklisted due to malware last year. Website owners typically have no idea they?ve been infected until the vicious programs wreak havoc, stripping customer banking and personal data or sometimes redirecting visitors to pornography sites that install yet more malicious software. Malware is also spread through so-called ?phishing? attacks, in which scammers send business and personal accounts what looks like a familiar e-mail but when opened and acted on allows malware into their computers, making their websites, customer lists, and banking data vulnerable. read more

May 4 – The acquisition of 60% of Weetabix by Chinese food producer Bright Food highlights the increasingly two-way nature of Western brand expansion into emerging markets, Fitch Ratings says. Stagnant growth in developed markets, combined with continued growth in emerging markets, has partly reversed the seemingly one-way trend of Western multinationals expanding into emerging markets that prevailed five years ago. We think this will continue as long as Western brands are still able to command a premium position among consumers in emerging markets – or provide other ways to drive demand – and emerging market companies remain cash rich. Utah Nation + World Neighborhood Politics Justice Polygamy LDS Church Education Weather UtahsRight. To minimize Utah businesses hiring illegal aliens, mandatory verification, with appropriate penalties, needs to be enacted. E-Verify works quite effectively to ensure that only legal workers are hired, and in 2010, Utah created a website for businesses that, for a small fee, indicate that they are using E-Verify. Topic: E-Business – The New Microsoft/Barnes & Noble E-Book Alliance Is Not Nearly as Foolish as … – Slate Magazine

Newco is made up of Barnes & Noble’s Nook business and its college division, plus a bunch of Microsoft’s money and patents, along with presumably some expertise. This amounts to a bailout of Barnes & Noble so potentially transformative that it’s extraordinary Microsoft didn’t get a larger equity stake. Barnes & Noble, by contrast, is a big-box retailing business that’s facing structural decline in the digital era. Microsoft doesn’t need Barnes & Noble the way Barnes & Noble needs Microsoft, but this is yet another way to try to channel the firm’s PC profits into a new line of business. It’s funny to describe a joint venture Microsoft and Barnes & Noble—two companies that dominated the world just a few years ago—as an underdog, but that’s exactly what it is. read more

Microsoft partners with B&N's Nook in e-book business – The Seattle Times- About: E-Business

The new partnership between Microsoft and Barnes & Noble, announced Monday, gives both companies added ammunition in their battles against Amazon. But more than that, the new, as-yet-unnamed Barnes & Noble subsidiary is significant in the far broader competition among large tech companies over where consumers will buy, consume, create and store all their digital content. For Barnes & Noble, the partnership means capital to enable it to compete more effectively with market-leading Amazon and its Kindle e-reader and Kindle Fire tablet. That’s why it benefits Microsoft to have a partner such as Barnes & Noble, which already has a large amount of content and a content infrastructure, including working relationships with book and magazine publishers, a large presence in the education market, and a self-publishing division, said Allen Weiner, an analyst with research firm Gartner. The partnership will enable Microsoft and Barnes & Noble to look at the future of how people are going to read, interact with stories, learn using these types of materials, and create works, he said. Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, said he believes Microsoft and Barnes & Noble will jointly develop some form of authoring tool, making it easy for people to publish. read more
