By bringing in hundreds of workers — many of them illegal immigrants, according to the government — mostly from Mexico and other Central American countries, and adding to them the local unemployed workers, the plant owners created a very low-cost workforce. Unfortunately, the bubble burst last year when the former CEO and other company officials were arrested and charged with an array of criminal activities including conspiracy, harboring illegal immigrants and identity theft, to name a few. As for controlling the illegal flow of workers into this country, the emphasis should be placed on the provider of the illegal jobs, namely the employers — not those wishing to take advantage of it. We cannot continue to profess that we are a nation of immigrants that is based on the rule of law, then put our government agencies in the position of treating would-be citizens like the criminals the law says they are. read more
