WE refer to the report “Action taken against 400 unregistered e-biz operators” ( The Star , July 21) and would like to draw your attention to one factual error. The report mentioned that Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken legal action against 400 local online e-business operators in the last two years for not registering as business entities. Actually it is the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) that goes after business entities operating on-line businesses without proper business licences. The Business Registration Act is issued by SSM and any legal action against the 400 local online e-business operators in the last two years for not registering as business entities can therefore only be taken by SSM under this law. MCMC only provides SSM with technical assistance to “detect” individuals and companies which conduct business illegally – when required by SSM for their investigations. read more
